How I feel about a few Body Positive-related issues
- What about personal preferences re: attraction?
- Can I be body positive and still want to diet?
- What about trans* people who are changing their bodies?
- What if I am concerned about my own health?
- Why is body positivity all about fat people?
I want to try and keep this simple. I’ll probably fail.
- Like what you like, promote what you love. Disregard what you dislike, don’t bash what you hate.
- I believe you can be Body Positive and want to lose or gain weight. What you do with your own body is your business. But please, be sensitive about how other people might feel when you talk about it; and if you are changing your body, make sure you’re doing it for your own comfort, on your own terms, and not because of any external pressure (e.g. society, media, peers).
- Body positivity does not mean forced satisfaction with the body you were born into; it means freedom for every individual to the body of their choice. What other people do with their bodies is entirely their business.
- You are absolutely entitled to be concerned about yourself if you feel that way. Break the erroneous connection between weight and health first. If you feel you have health issues, be sure to look for the root cause. Weight is not a root cause of poor health. Factors like diet and exercise have a great bearing on your health, but many many people are skinny on an unhealthy diet and many many others are fat while eating healthily.
While you are entitled to concern regarding your own health, nobody else’s health is yours to be concerned about. Even if you’ve been on a wonderful journey of discovery regarding your own health and body image, it is not your place to tell a single other person how to feel about theirs.- Don’t be ridiculous. Body Positivity is for everybody, for every body. However, when your body is similar to the bodies you see in movies, on TV, in magazines, in commercials and on packaging, you don’t really need somebody telling you “your body is not wrong.” If you’re thin, white, and cisgendered, society is already telling you that enough. Nothing’s stopping you being part of the movement, but don’t expect a spotlight.
As ever, my ask is always open for feedback and callouts if I’ve said anything out of line. Or of course, if anybody has any other questions!
AMEN TO THAT.
There is no one body that is THE RIGHT body.
We are all different.
As long as you identify as a woman, you are a real woman, and your body is great.
Do not allow others to make you feel bad about it.
THANK YOU!
yes, thank you! let’s celebrate all bodies, not compare them!
